Growing up in East Chicago, Indiana, I found refuge, companionship, and mentorship at the local community centers. These places were once the heart of our neighborhoods, offering free access to safe spaces where children and teenagers could grow, learn, and stay out of trouble. When I raised my own kids here, those same centers continued to be an invaluable part of our lives, providing essential after-school activities, educational support, and emotional guidance.

Today, the closure of the MLK, Penn, Bessie Owens, and Markstown community centers is a devastating blow to our community. Our children, who deserve the same opportunities we had, are now required to pay fees to access the very centers that were once freely available. This change not only places a financial burden on families but also limits accessibility for those who need it most.

Studies have shown that access to community centers plays a crucial role in youth development, offering safe environments and enriching programs that deter juvenile delinquency. According to the National Institute of Justice, engaging youth in structured activities reduces crime rates and increases educational attainment. Other cities have successfully managed to keep similar community programs afloat by leveraging diverse funding streams and community support. We need the commitment of our local leaders to prioritize this issue and take actionable steps to reopen these centers.
