Repair and reopen historic Carnegie South Branch Library in Cleveland, Ohio.

Repair and reopen historic Carnegie South Branch Library in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Issue
This 104 year old Carnegie Library has served the community for over a century as a library, a beautiful public space and a neighborhood anchor.
Originally there were 15 Carnegie libraries in the Cleveland Public Library system; there are only 5 now in use.
If Carnegie South is sold, the public will have lost part of its wealth, and a unique and beautiful building on the historic corner of Clark Avenue and Scranton Rd. This Scranton Road neighborhood is a destination for the Towpath Trail corridor currently under construction. This will make the library location a bike friendly and walking friendly environment for the Scranton Rd. area and beyond.
Cleveland is on the upswing and rejuvenation of its historic neighborhoods has proven valuable most especially in this Tremont area.
Once a library is sold anything can happen. If it becomes a restaurant or bar and you can’t afford to go there, you can no longer enjoy that public space. If it becomes a private office and you don’t work there, you can no longer enjoy it. Many Carnegies sold off went through multiple ownership to end up in some cases permanently abandoned. If you have seen one of these older Carnegie libraries and have seen the architectural grandeur, you will know what we mean.
