The Issue

Ever since I was a kid, I've dreamed of being a skater, but living here in Port Jervis, NY, I haven't been able to truly pursue that passion. The skate park at Riverside Park by the pump track is old and inadequate for anyone wanting to learn or enjoy skating. It's a small, worn-out space that lacks the essential features like bowls, ramps, jumps, and rails which are vital for both beginners and experienced skaters to improve their skills. Me and my friends often gather around, talking about skating and how incredible it would be to have a decent skate park in our hometown where we can truly enjoy the sport we love.

A renovated skate park would not only benefit aspiring skaters like me but also provide a safe and accessible space for kids and teens to hang out, hone their skills, and stay active outdoors. Skateboarding is more than just a hobby; it's a community-builder and a healthy outlet for creativity and physical activity. Cities around the country have invested in modern skate parks, which have significantly contributed to reducing crime rates by providing teenagers with a constructive use of their time and building strong, supportive communities.

Port Jervis deserves a skate park that matches the enthusiasm and spirit of its youth. By upgrading Riverside Park's skate area, the city can foster a love for outdoor activities, help reduce sedentary lifestyles among young people, and enhance community spirit. This doesn't just benefit skaters—it boosts local pride and can even attract visitors, benefiting local businesses.

We propose a complete renovation of the Riverside Park skate park, including the installation of new, modern features such as different types of ramps, bowls, rails, and an improved surface to ensure safety and a variety of challenges for skaters of all levels. Let's make Riverside Park a centerpiece for community gatherings and youthful energy.

Please join me in calling upon the City of Port Jervis to invest in the future of its youth by renovating the Riverside Park skate park. Sign this petition to show your support for a new, improved skate facility where dreams can be realized and community spirit can thrive.
