Support Reno's Accessory Dwelling Unit Zoning change to help lower housing costs

Support Reno's Accessory Dwelling Unit Zoning change to help lower housing costs

The Issue

Reno has an affordable housing problem.

The problem is complex and many other cities are facing similar challenges.  Reno is looking at many solutions and specifically at one that has helped cities around the country including Portland, LA and Durango.    That solution is to allow for more Accessory Dwelling Units (also known as ADUs or Granny Flats) to be built on existing single family home lots.

ADUs are small dwellings 200-800sq feet that cannot be larger than 50% of the original house.  The change impacts homes zoned as "Single Family" with a lot size over 9000sq feet.    These ADUs represent a great way to "unlock" land and create new more affordable housing options and have specific benefit for seniors, early career professionals and students.

Unfortunately, this proposed changed to zoning has created an uprising in NIMBYism (Not in my back yard) and a vocal minority is trying to derail the zoning change.

We need your support to let the Planning Commission and the City of Reno know that you support ADUs as a way to tackle the affordable housing problems in Reno.

Background on ADUs
Summing up ADU research: are accessory dwelling units as great, or as horrible, as people say?

Why tiny ADUs may be a big answer to the urban housing crisis
