Renew The East Palace for Season 2
The Issue
Netflix currently labels The East Palace as a limited series, but its story, world-building, characters, and ending provide a clear and natural foundation for a second season. We are asking Netflix to renew The East Palace and allow its creators to continue the journey of Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang.
Released worldwide on July 17, 2026, The East Palace is an eight-episode Korean supernatural period drama starring Nam Joo-hyuk, Roh Yoon-seo, and Cho Seung-woo. The series follows Gu-cheon, a spirit slayer who can cross between the worlds of the living and the dead, and Saeng-gang, a court lady who can hear and communicate with spirits. Together, they enter the East Palace under the king’s orders and investigate the curse haunting the royal family.
The series successfully combines historical drama, Korean folklore, dark fantasy, political conflict, action, horror, mystery, and emotional storytelling. Its supernatural world is not limited to one palace or one enemy. The drama introduces an entire spiritual system containing different types of ghosts and creatures, including common-gwi, won-gwi, ak-gwi, and gwi-mae. Each spirit is shaped by a different level of grief, resentment, longing, or unfinished business. This extensive mythology gives the creators many possible stories to explore beyond the events of the first season.
The first season also proved that there is a global audience for this world. According to Netflix’s official Top 10 report, The East Palace debuted at No. 2 on the Global Top 10 list for non-English television, receiving 4.9 million views despite being available for only three days during its first tracking week. It also reached No. 1 on Netflix’s television chart in South Korea during the week of July 20–26, 2026. These results demonstrate significant early interest in an original Korean dark-fantasy series that does not rely on a conventional modern romance or familiar contemporary setting.
Most importantly, the ending does not permanently close Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang’s story. Although the central palace conflict reaches a conclusion, Gu-cheon remains connected to the Realm of Gwi by a supernatural chain. Saeng-gang cannot see this chain, meaning she leaves the palace without knowing that Gu-cheon may still be in danger. Netflix’s own official ending explanation highlights this detail and even includes Nam Joo-hyuk’s interpretation that Gu-cheon could one day be dragged back into the spirit realm.
That final image is more than a minor unanswered detail. It creates a direct threat to one of the main characters and provides a strong starting point for another season. A continuation could explore the consequences of Gu-cheon’s connection to the Realm of Gwi, whether that connection is becoming stronger, and whether Saeng-gang can discover a way to free him. It could also show the pair encountering new spirits, unresolved injustices, supernatural locations, and dangers outside the East Palace.
Saeng-gang’s ability to hear spirits also remains part of her life. Gu-cheon remains someone who exists between the human and spiritual worlds. Their abilities naturally allow them to continue helping spirits whose resentment prevents them from passing on. Therefore, Season 2 would not need to undo the first season’s ending or repeat its central palace mystery. It could begin a new chapter while preserving the mythology, emotional relationships, and supernatural rules already established.
Renewing the series would also allow Netflix to develop a distinctive Korean fantasy property centred on Korean ghost traditions and historical imagery. The production has already established the Realm of Gwi, the different classifications of spirits, Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang’s abilities, and the visual identity of its supernatural world. Ending the series after eight episodes would leave much of that carefully constructed mythology unexplored.
We understand that The East Palace was produced and released as a limited series. However, the limited-series label should not prevent a continuation when the story still contains meaningful possibilities and viewers are actively asking to return to this world. Other stories initially presented as self-contained projects have continued when there was sufficient audience interest and a worthwhile direction for another chapter.
This petition is not asking for the first season’s conclusion to be changed. We are asking for its final revelation to be followed. Gu-cheon’s chain to the Realm of Gwi, Saeng-gang’s continuing connection with the dead, and the larger supernatural world all provide substantial material for a new story.
Please renew The East Palace for Season 2 with its original creative team and principal cast. Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang may have left the palace, but their connection to the world of spirits—and their journey together—is not truly over.
