Why this petition matters

Started by Deni King

Help us to rename a section of Sears Street in South Philadelphia after the legendary Sam Reed.

Sam Reed was the musical director and orchestra leader at the Uptown theater in North Philadelphia. During his time there from the 1950’s to 1970’s, he worked with Jazz and R&B acts alike. He was the man behind the music at the theater and the ultimate Uptown Theater insider.

Later, in the 70’s he went on to become the musical director for soul singing heartthrob and superstar Teddy Pendergrass. He also worked for Gamble and Huff’s Philadelphia International Records. In 2012, he received the Jazz Journalist Association’s Jazz Heroes Award. He was also instrumental in starting The Point Breeze Performing Arts Center. In 2014, he received the prestigious President’s Award for his years of service at The Uptown Theater.

To honor his memory, we would like to have the name of the city block where he lived for many years renamed   Sam Reed Way   to honor his many contributions. Please sign our petition so that we can present it to the City Council in Philadelphia. We, his friends,  think this is wonderful and lasting tribute for this legendary artist and Philadelphia Icon.
