Renaming of the Governor de Graaf School

Renaming of the Governor de Graaf School
The Issue
Dear members of the Statian community,
I believe it is time to address an important issue that concerns our island's only public school, which is currently named after Governor Johannes de Graaff. While it is crucial to acknowledge historical figures and their contributions, it is equally important to recognize the full scope of their actions, especially when they have participated in reprehensible activities like slavery.
Johannes de Graaff is remembered for being the governor who first saluted the American flag, a moment of historical significance. However, it is also true that he was a slave owner and played a role in the institution of slavery on our island. His actions led to the pillaging of Sint Eustatius by British Admiral Rodney, and it was our enslaved ancestors who bore the brunt of this suffering.
In 2024, we must consider the impact of the names we choose for our public institutions, especially schools where our children receive their education. The name of the school plays a significant role in shaping the values and ideals our young ones carry with them as they grow. We cannot unconsciously teach them to revere a person who took part in the inhumane practice of slavery.
Therefore, I believe we must change the name of the school, and this change should involve our entire community. The children of Statia should have a say in choosing a new name, one that reflects our shared values and aspirations for a better future. This process can be a valuable educational experience in itself, teaching our children about the importance of acknowledging and rectifying historical injustices.
In summary, the name of our only public school, the Governor de Graaff School, must be changed to ensure that it aligns with the principles of equality, justice, and inclusivity that we hold dear. Let us come together as a community to make this change happen, and let our children play an active role in shaping the future of their education. It is through such actions that we can strive for a more inclusive and just society for all.
Sincerely yours,
Urisha Blake
