The Issue

Growing up on the east side of Wilmington, Delaware, I've always felt a deep connection to the rich and vibrant history of our Black community. This area is not just where I grew up, but where countless others have lived, thrived, and contributed to the cultural mosaic of Wilmington. Over the years, I've seen how the west side of town, proudly known as 'Little Italy,' stands as a beacon of pride for its community, celebrating their heritage and unity. It's time for the east side to have the same recognition and pride.

The east side of Wilmington has always been a cornerstone for the African American community, reflecting its enduring spirit, resilience, and the invaluable contributions its people have made to the city. By renaming the east side to 'Little Africa,' we are not only paying homage to our past but building a future where the youth can find inspiration and pride in their heritage.

This simple yet profound change can serve as a foundation for cultivating respect, identity, and unity. The name 'Little Africa' would stand as a testament to the struggles and achievements of those who came before us, creating a legacy that the younger generations can learn from and build upon. Importantly, it would also draw attention to the stories of African Americans in Wilmington, fostering a sense of pride that resonates in individuals and communities.

An official designation of 'Little Africa' would provide a platform for educational programs, cultural events, and community gatherings that reflect the history and vibrant present of this neighborhood. Such initiatives can invigorate our community, attract visitors, and foster a sense of belonging and solidarity among residents.

Data from the Pew Research Center indicates that communities with culturally acknowledged neighborhoods tend to have higher civic engagement and stronger community bonds. By promoting the identity and cultural heritage of the east side, we can instigate positive social change that benefits every resident.

Please join me in calling upon the Wilmington City Council to officially recognize the east side as 'Little Africa.' It's a step towards honoring our past, celebrating our present, and paving the way for a brighter future. We need your support to turn this vision into reality. Sign the petition and be a part of this important change for our community.
