Having spent most of my adult life in Newfoundland and Labrador, this province has become my chosen home. Growing up in Kingston, Ontario, alongside Lake Ontario, I can not stand the though or theat of the lake's name being changed by a foreign government. The recent political rhetoric that threatens both Canadian sovereignty and the names and histories of places that are dear to us is deeply troubling. The suggestion of renaming Lake Ontario by Donald Trump is an attack on our sovereignty.  

In light of these developments, the thought that the Trump Islands—North Trump Island, South Trump Island, and Trump Island Tickle in Newfoundland and Labrador—bear a name synonymous with the threat to our national integrity is disheartening. 

Our province is famous for names that tell captivating stories, names that celebrate our heritage, culture, and people. Keeping such a contentious and divisive name as "Trump" on our map is not reflective of the kind-hearted, welcoming spirit of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Renaming these islands is more than symbolic. It's an opportunity to reinforce our identity and uphold the pride of being not only Newfoundlanders and Labradorians but also proud Canadians. By choosing a new name, we align with our values of unity, inclusion, and local heritage.

Let's urge our officials to consider alternatives that better reflect the spirit of Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as Canada. Whether we draw inspiration from our rich history, the natural beauty of the terrain, or figures who embody the spirit of Newfoundlandand Labrador, we can find names that enrich rather than divide and show our country will not be bullied. 

Sign this petition to call upon the government to rename North Trump Island, South Trump Island, and Trump Island Tickle. The new name should be done in consultation with residents/cabin owners of the Trump Islands.
