As an ardent NSW supporter, I've always been bewildered by the fact that our NSW players are awarded a medal named after a Queensland player in the annual State of Origin. The series, closely contested by the Blues and the Maroons, requires the recognition of both sides. The Wally Lewis medal, named after a famed Queensland player, doesn't resonate with the spirit of equality inherent in this thrilling rivalry. Mind you, it's not to disparage Mr. Lewis's significant contributions, but rather to promote a sense of unity and fairness.

This petition proposes the renaming of this important title to the "Mortimer-Lewis Medal", incorporating recognition for NSW's Steve Mortimer, an iconic player who has historically held equal significance in the series. Lewis and Mortimer both led their respective teams to victories during the 1980s, characterized by intense competition and sportsmanship, reflecting the essence of the State of Origin series.

According to the National Rugby League, the series has seen an almost equal number of NSW and QLD victories, with NSW winning 17 series and QLD winning 24 since the inception of the series in 1980. The winner's trophy rightfully bears the names of both states, so why not the Player of the Series medal?
