Rename The Rogers Centre back to The Skydome

The Issue

Growing up near Toronto, I fondly remember all the baseball games, concerts, and events that took place in one of the city's most iconic landmarks—the Skydome. For those of us who were around before the name change, it was more than just a name; it was part of our city's identity. Everyone called it the Skydome, and it feels like it has always belonged to the people of Toronto under that name.

When the stadium opened in 1989, it was celebrated as the first retractable-roof stadium in the world, a marvel of engineering that put Toronto on the map. For many glorious years, the Skydome was our gathering place, home to countless sports victories and cultural events. It was more than a building; it was a part of us.

In 2005, Rogers Communications purchased the stadium, and thus began the transition to what is now known as the Rogers Centre. Yet, in the hearts of many Torontonians, it still remains the Skydome. The name Rogers Centre feels commercial and detached. It's a business name that ignores the deep emotional and historical significance that Skydome holds.

A name is more than just words; it's a living history of a city and its people. Restoring the name Skydome is a way of preserving our shared memories and recognizing an era of innovation and unity in Toronto's history. It's a connection to our past that deserves to be honoured and protected.

While corporate sponsorships are crucial for funding, respecting the community's history and sentiment is equally important. Cities around the world manage to maintain and honour historical names while also benefiting from corporate partnerships—Toronto can too.

Help us in our mission to bring back the name Skydome. Let's hold on to a piece of Toronto's legacy for future generations to cherish and celebrate. By signing this petition, you are choosing nostalgia and heritage over a corporate title. Let's make our voices heard and rename Rogers Centre back to Skydome.
