The Issue

Once a beacon of innovation and modernism, people flocked to San Francisco to make it their home, tech companies sprung up around the city, and tourists traveled across oceans to visit. San Francisco has since lost its edge. Issues such as rampant homelessness, drug abuse, and a crimewave have contributed to an exodus of business and population. It is up to us to revitalize our city and make it appealing. At this stage, drastic measures are required, one of which is that we need a name that adequately reflects the city's modern identity.

The current name derives from the titular Presidio/Fortress established by the Spanish Empire in 1776 at the northern tip of the peninsula. The city has since grown to a population of hundreds of thousands, with urban sprawl engulfing the peninsula. A simple, secular, and modern name is wanted by many. Bay Area locals (And outsiders) already prefer to use shorter alternatives to San Francisco's cumbersome current 4-syllabllic name. Usage of nicknames such as "The City", "Frisco", and "SF" demonstrate that the people want change.

One possible proposal is to rename "San Francisco" as "Bay City". Not only does this new name derive from the city's adjacent geography, it also has its origin in Pop-Culture: In Richard Morgan's cyberpunk Sci-Fi novel as well as the Netflix series "Altered Carbon", the story takes place in a futuristic San Francisco, referred to as "Bay City". The name is also the title of Junko Yagami's popular Japanese city-pop song. No other major metropolis officially holds this name, making it a fairly unique and catchy option as a name.

Besides "Bay City", an alternative option is: "Fog City". Deriving from the iconic common weather of San Francisco, this nickname is featured in the naming of several local businesses, from record labels, to microbreweries!

Ultimately, we suggest the creation of a ballot measure, which would give the residents of San Francisco the final choice of whether and what they wish to rename the city as.

Many major metropolitan regions around the world have officially changed their names. Istanbul was Constantinople for at least a thousand years, even New York was once called New Amsterdam. Saint Petersburg was once Petrograd. The same can be done for San Francisco.

Renaming the city with a modern name may also bring new waves of tourism and investment into the city, reviving it from its current economic and cultural slumber.

We understand that some will oppose this measure, calling it a waste of resources and time, but this effort will be much easier to undertake now, than in the future, and the name certainly will change eventually, so let's do it now! We do not intend to take away the name San Francisco from the city's heritage. The city should continue to honor its Spanish, Italian, and Catholic legacy by retaining the name of the Presidio of San Francisco. Many locations and institutions in the city would also likely continue to honor the old name.
