Rename School Psychologist to School Therapist

Rename School Psychologist to School Therapist
The Issue
As a concerned parent, I am writing this petition to advocate for a change in the title of "school psychologist" to "school therapist." This issue is personal to me, and I’m sure you will find to you as well, as I recently discovered that the school psychologist who was responsible for administering tests and providing assistance to my daughter did not possess the qualifications I had assumed. What that means to you is that your child is receiving or potentially could receive treatment from a professional that is not qualified to provide those services to your child. These professionals are also completely independent and not overseen by a licensed professional. Many districts, such as the case of my own, don’t even have licensed professionals to refer to in the event they need help. My district only has 2 doctoral level professionals and close to 50 others. This should be unacceptable as a society to allow someone that is not qualified to perform the job duties in dealing with our children’s already delicate minds.
In my daughter's case, she required testing and support from what I believed was a licensed psychologist with a doctoral degree. However, it came as a shock when I found out that the individual in question held only a master's degree with a psychology certificate. This revelation made me question their ability to administer assessments accurately and interpret the results effectively.
This experience has led me to believe that renaming the role of "school psychologist" would be more accurate and transparent. By changing it to "school therapist," we can ensure that individuals in this position are appropriately qualified and possess the necessary credentials.
It is essential for parents like myself, who trust these professionals with our children's well-being, to have confidence in their expertise. The current title may mislead parents into assuming they are dealing with licensed psychologists when they are not.
To support this petition further, let us consider some relevant facts:
1) Distinction between psychologists and therapists: Psychologists typically hold doctoral degrees (Ph.D., Psy.D., or Ed.D.) and undergo extensive training in psychological assessment, diagnosis, therapy techniques, research methods, ethics, and more. On the other hand, therapists often hold master's degrees (M.A., M.S., or M.Ed.) or other specialized certifications.

2) Qualifications matter: The qualifications of professionals working with our children should align with their responsibilities. Accurate assessments require expertise gained through advanced education.

3) Misleading titles can lead to confusion: The current title of "school psychologist" may mislead parents into assuming that the individual possesses a doctoral degree and is licensed to practice psychology. This can create unrealistic expectations and undermine trust in the educational system.

By renaming the role to "school therapist," we can ensure that professionals in this position are appropriately qualified, possess relevant credentials, and provide accurate assessments and therapy for our children.
Let us come together as concerned parents, educators, and advocates for change. Sign this petition to support renaming the position of "school psychologist" to "school therapist." Together, we can ensure transparency, maintain high standards of expertise, and promote trust in our educational system.
