Rename Red Onions as Purple Onions

Rename Red Onions as Purple Onions

The Issue

Personal experiences often inspire us to challenge the status quo. In this instance, a simple observation has led to this deeply personal appeal: rename "Red Onion" to "Purple Onion." To the untrained eye, the name may seem insignificant, but to others like me, the proper identification of this beloved vegetable is a matter of authenticity and respect for visual cues our food provides.

Red onions, contrary to their name, have a beautiful purplish skin and a slight magenta hue. Despite its misleading name, this onion variety is popular among chefs and home cooks for its sweet yet pungent flavor and can be regularly spotted in salads, sandwiches, and various savory dishes. This recognition and appreciation, however, doesn't change the fact that the external hue is far from the "red" we see on apples or tomatoes.

Scientifically, the color in red (or shall we say, purple) onions is due to a class of compounds known as anthocyanins, known for their potential health benefits and typically found in blue, purple, and deeply colored foods (Encyclopedia Britannica). So, renaming the red onion as purple onion would inherently echo their phytochemical make-up and give credit to their true visually appealing color.

By signing this petition, you will be supporting a cause that aims to bring alignment between a product's name and its physical identity, fostering increased clarity, honesty, and authenticity in our food naming conventions. Let’s nourish this movement of truth in every layer of our lives, and especially in our meals—starting with the humble onion. Please sign this petition today; let's rename red onions as purple onions.
