Nan M. Wood was a trailblazing educator and an inspiring leader in Buffalo Public Schools. She served as the principal of Community School #53, where her dedication to students and commitment to excellence left a lasting impact.
Why Nan M. Wood Deserves This Honor:
- Historic Achievement: Nan M. Wood and her daughter Lauren was the first Black mother and daughter duo to both serve as principals of elementary schools in Buffalo. Mrs. Nan M. Wood led one of the largest elementary schools in the district. Through student travel excursions in the United States, Canada and Europe, Mrs. Wood, alongside a dedicated cadre of teachers, broadened her students’ perspectives and opened their eyes to the wider world.
- Distinguished Career: Before leading School #53, she taught at PS 6 and PS 52 and served as assistant principal at Fillmore Middle School.
- Recognized Excellence: Her contributions earned numerous awards, including the P.U.S.H. for Excellence Award and the Black Educators Association Educator of the Year Award.
- Enduring Legacy: Nan Wood fought tirelessly to provide resources for students, such as creating a home economics room, and inspired generations through her unwavering commitment to education.
