Rename Local Park in Honor of Mario Gonzalez
Rename Local Park in Honor of Mario Gonzalez
The Issue
As a lifelong resident of Alameda, CA, I have witnessed firsthand the disproportionate policing against our most vulnerable and economically disadvantaged citizens. It is a harsh reality that minorities and houseless individuals often face harassment while property owners are prioritized. This imbalance in our community became tragically clear with the death of Mario Gonzalez at the hands of those sworn to protect us.
On April 19, 2021, we lost Mario Gonzalez to an act of police violence right here in our local park. His memory continues to be a stark reminder of the systemic issues we face as a community. Renaming this park after him would not only honor his life but also serve as a permanent place where people can remember those taken from us by police violence.
By renaming this park after Mario Gonzalez, we are taking an important step towards restorative justice and acknowledging the need for change within our policing system. We are making it clear that every life matters and that no one should be forgotten or overlooked due to their economic status or ethnicity.
This is more than just renaming a park; it's about recognizing injustice, honoring those who have suffered, and making tangible changes within our community for better equality and fairness.
Please join me in calling on Alameda City Council to rename this local park after Mario Gonzalez - because his life mattered, his story matters, and he deserves to be remembered always.
