Rename "Imposter Syndrome" to "Perfectionist Syndrome"

The Issue

As someone living with what is commonly called "Imposter Syndrome", I can testify to the negative impact that this misguiding name can have on a person's mental health. Contrary to its current name, this syndrome name causes misunderstanding as the person is NOT an imposter or fraud but it is a sentiment that unjustly fuels self-doubt and anxiety. it is about an intense and relentless pursuit of perfection.

In reality, those suffering from this syndrome are not attempting to deceive others, but are instead struggling with constantly setting high standards for themselves - striving to be perfect. The term "Imposter Syndrome" wrongly attributes fraudulent intent to these individuals, thus exacerbating the emotional and psychological strain they experience.

The American Psychological Association notes a marked increase in individuals experiencing symptoms associated with "Imposter Syndrome", particularly among high achievers and perfectionists (APA, 2020). This misnomer is therefore affecting a significant portion of the population, posing a threat to their mental health.

To negate this harm, we propose a more accurate and compassionate alternative: "Perfectionist Syndrome". We believe this change will help to remove the unnecessary stigma attached to this syndrome and better reflect the reality of what sufferers are experiencing.

In the interest of promoting understanding and empathy for those struggling with this mental health issue, we urge the relevant psychological and medical bodies to consider this suggested name change. No one should feel like an imposter when what they are truly facing is the pressure of perfection.
