Rename Herzog Park after Dr. Bethel Solomons

Rename Herzog Park after Dr. Bethel Solomons
The Issue
For many years, Herzog Park in Dublin's Rathgar area has honored the legacy of Chaim Herzog, a notable figure born in Belfast and later becoming the sixth President of Israel. While it is important not to deny history, it is similarly important not to condone genocide or colonialism. Thus, we ask that the park be renamed after an Irish Jewish figure in history that is not connected to the current Palestinian genocide.
We propose renaming Herzog Park to acknowledge Dr. Bethel Solomons, an esteemed figure who was not only a beloved resident of Dublin but also made monumental contributions to medicine and society as a whole, and saw his identity as an Irish Jew as intrinsic to one another. Dr. Solomons was a distinguished gynaecologist and served the community with unparalleled dedication and expertise. His influence extended beyond medicine through his involvement in Celtic Football Club as well as his tenure as Master of the Rotunda Hospital.
The Dublin city councillors are set to vote on a motion to rename the park. Given that only one objection was raised when the council's Commemorations and Naming Committee previously recommended the name change, it is evident that there is widespread support for honoring someone other than Herzog.
Renaming the park after Dr. Solomons would not only recognize his significant contributions but also embrace the spirit of celebrating local heroes who have contributed immensely to our community, and further has the added benefit of celebrating the Irish Jewish community. It is a fitting tribute to someone who lived and worked in Dublin, making it a better place for all its residents.
Join us in urging the Dublin City Council to honor a true pillar of our community by renaming Herzog Park to proudly bear the name of Dr. Bethel Solomons. Your support can influence this important change and ensure that future generations remember those who truly made a difference in our city. Sign this petition to show your support for this meaningful initiative.
