Rename Glenn McConnell Residence Hall at CofC

Rename Glenn McConnell Residence Hall at CofC
The Issue
The College of Charleston built Glenn McConnell residence hall in 1980, and renovated it in 2022. It is one of the smallest residence halls, and is located on the outskirts of campus. It is named after Glenn McConnell, who served as the College's president from 2014-2018 before he was succeeded by President Hsu. McConnell and his values tarnish the reputation of the College, and he is a misrepresentation of its students, faculty, and community.
McConnell "was a member of the South Carolina Senate, representing the 41st District from 1981 to March 13, 2012. He ascended to the office of lieutenant governor on March 13, 2012 because he was the Senate President Pro Tempore. He served as the 89th Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina until June 18, 2014. The office of lieutenant governor had become vacant because of the resignation of Ken Ard on March 9, 2012 due to his indictment by a state Grand Jury for ethics violations," (Wikipedia).
McConnell's known support for the Confederate flag actively goes against everything that the College of Charleston stands for and values. CofC is known for being accepting of all people and for its varying programs and clubs that benefit all students. The student body wants to ensure that the College of Charleston maintains its reputation and initiatives of embracement and belonging in every part of its campus. This includes the people and names that are highlighted and widely acknowledged within buildings, programs, and community centers. McConnell's beliefs and ethics counteract the actions of the College, especially as an establishment in the Lowcountry with a rich history and presence of POC communities. The student body wishes to rename Glenn McConnell residence hall because of this.
