The Issue

Growing up in Statesboro, Georgia, I was always inspired by the remarkable contributions of two extraordinary individuals, Ernest and George Jackson. These African American trailblazers were not just brick masons; they were master builders who laid the foundation for many homes and businesses in our community. Their dedication to their craft and their commitment to quality made a lasting impact, shaping the very landscape of Statesboro and enriching the lives of countless families.

The work of Ernest and George Jackson extends beyond simple construction; it represents resilience, determination, and a celebration of African American heritage. Despite facing myriad challenges due to racial barriers and inequality, they persevered, creating a legacy that continues to inspire generations. Their stories and their bricks have become the cornerstones of a community that thrives on diversity, inclusion, and hard work.

To honor their memories and ensure their legacy is never forgotten, I propose renaming Garfield Street to Jackson Way. This change would serve as a daily reminder of the enduring contributions of Ernest and George Jackson, highlighting the impact they had on Statesboro's architectural and cultural development. It would also serve as an inspiring testament to future generations about the power of skill, perseverance, and dedication.

Renaming a street in their honor would not only recognize their achievements but would also celebrate African American history and acknowledge the pivotal role played by the Jacksons in the growth of our beloved community. Furthermore, this change would encourage other communities to reflect on and honor similar unsung heroes who have contributed to their local heritage but have too often gone unrecognized.

We call upon the Statesboro City Council and local government officials to consider and approve this proposal. By renaming Garfield Street to Jackson Way, we celebrate and preserve the contributions of these remarkable individuals, ensuring that their stories remain alive for future generations. Please support this initiative by signing the petition and help us make a significant and meaningful change in our community.
