Rename Dougherty County Library to honor Gwen Crawford

Rename Dougherty County Library to honor Gwen Crawford
The Issue
Growing up in Albany, Georgia, I was constantly inspired by the courage and determination of the people around me. My father was a chauffeur for domestic workers during the Civil Rights movement, and through him, I learned about the struggles and triumphs of individuals fighting for equality and justice. One of the most influential figures in my life has been my cousin, Gwen Crawford. Gwen has always been our family’s pride and joy, a pillar of strength and a beacon of hope.
It is in light of her immense contribution and the incredible legacy she has left behind that I am advocating for the renaming of the Dougherty County Library in her honor. Using 'The Footsoldier' documentary as a source of inspiration, we see Gwen Crawford’s story not just as a family treasure but as a public narrative that deserves recognition and celebration.
Gwen's bravery and commitment during the Civil Rights movement hold significant historical value, not just to our family but to the community and the nation. She is an icon of the larger struggle for Civil Rights, embodying the ideals of equality and justice for all. Her story is a powerful reminder that young people can—and do—change the world. Naming the library after her will serve as a continued inspiration for future generations, instilling in them the same bravery, resilience, and commitment to justice that Gwen exhibited throughout her life.
We call upon the Dougherty County Board of Trustees and the local government to consider this proposal. By renaming the library, we preserve and honor Gwen’s legacy, ensuring that her courage and dedication continue to inspire our community. Please join me in this movement to recognize a true hero by signing this petition.
