Rename Computer Background Process from 'Daemon' to 'BG Process'

Rename Computer Background Process from 'Daemon' to 'BG Process'

The Issue

We begin with the personal element that carries this petition forward - the computing processes. They run in the background, silently undertaking tasks without occupying the system, without possessing it. Being such an essential part of the software world, it is unsettling for many to refer to them as a 'daemon', a label that subtly refers to a 'demon'. The demand isn't to alter its functionality, but its nomenclature, a transition in title from 'Daemon' to what it really is, a 'backgroud (bg) process'.

Let's probe a bit deeper into this issue. According to a report by the Linux Journal, the term 'daemon' is indeed often misinterpreted due to its phonetic similarity to 'demon'. This lexical disquiet has become a widespread sentiment among Linux users. The name is also defined as an alternative spelling of demon. A change in terminology might seem minimal, but it would certainly enhance comfort levels among Linux enthusiasts and users globally.
People outside of the computer world often laugh, thinking that developers are trying to cause the computer to be possessed with an evil spirit!

We don't argue against change; we advocate for it. A process is not an entity possessing a computer or any system. It merely operates to ensure smooth functioning and speed in the computer system. Owing to this, the significant change we propose merely alters the name, not the essence. It’s a small step which will make a colossal difference in the lifestyle and comfort of millions of computer users, and others, worldwide.

We urge you to join us in this movement to bring forth this change. Let the process not be a 'daemon', but a 'bg process', as it truly always has been. And may our computers forever be spirit free! Please, sign this petition today. Let's show that change is not just a suggestion of the few, but a click away for the many.
