Rename Chavez Streets and Buildings Nationwide to Honor Dolores Huerta Instead

Rename Chavez Streets and Buildings Nationwide to Honor Dolores Huerta Instead
The Issue
Across the United States, streets, schools, and public buildings are named after Cesar Chavez to honor the farmworker movement.
But recent reports have raised serious allegations about Chavez’s conduct, prompting organizations tied to his legacy to launch investigations and reconsider public commemorations -- allegations of inappropriate behavior involving women and minors during his leadership of the United Farm Workers.
While these allegations remain under review, they have led many communities to question who we choose to honor in our shared public spaces.
At the same time, Dolores Huerta — co-founder of the United Farm Workers — has spent decades fighting for workers’ rights, civil rights, and equality. Her leadership helped shape one of the most important labor movements in American history, and her contributions continue to inspire generations.
This is an opportunity to uplift a leader whose impact is widely recognized and whose work reflects the values we want to celebrate nationwide.
We call on city councils, state governments, and federal leaders across the United States to begin renaming streets, buildings, and public spaces currently named after Cesar Chavez in honor of Dolores Huerta.
