For too long, the name of the 59 Street-Columbus Circle subway station has stood as a reminder of Christopher Columbus's neglectful and negative impact on indigenous people. This does not correspond with the values of inclusivity and respect that our society strives to uphold today. As someone deeply invested in the future and justice, I believe it is time to make a change that aligns with the principles of the community we live in.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice, one of the nation's leading institutions focused on criminal justice, deserves recognition and visibility within our public transit system, similar to other colleges that have subway stations named after them, like Columbia University and City College. Naming the station as "59 Street-John Jay College" would not only honor the college's important role in shaping future leaders in justice but would also promote an inclusive community free from the legacy of colonialism that the current name evokes.

This change is practical and aligns with existing precedents in public transportation naming conventions. It offers clear benefits, making the campus more identifiable and accessible to students, faculty, and visitors from around the world who rely on the subway daily. Additionally, it is a step toward acknowledging and respecting the narratives of all communities in New York City.

I urge MTA officials and the New York City Council to take action in renaming the 59 Street-Columbus Circle subway station to "59 Street-John Jay College" and demonstrate a commitment to progressive values and educational development.
