Remove Wayne Gretzky's Name from Brantford Parkway and Sports Centre

Remove Wayne Gretzky's Name from Brantford Parkway and Sports Centre
The Issue
To all who value Canadian national pride and integrity, our sense of patriotism demands our attention. We speak out on the issue that has deeply rattled us and made us question what loyalty and patriotism mean today. Wayne Gretzky, our national hockey treasure, showed questionable support for the US team during the 4 Nations final hockey game. Despite being asked to be there as the honorary team captain for Canada, his actions held a different narrative.
Dating back to 1984, Gretzky has racked up countless honours and solidified his status as a Canadian icon. Our city, Brantford, has showcased his legacy by naming a parkway and sports centre in his honour. However, Gretzky's recent behavior raises questions not only about his personal affiliations but about what we stand for as proud Canadians.
While it is understood that friendships and relationships can extend beyond national boundaries and international competition can promote such goodwill, it remains that displaying apparent disloyalty at a crucial event cannot be easily dismissed. Condoning such actions could distort our national identity and our heritage in the field of ice hockey, which has been a significant part of our culture and history.
We don't ask for this lightly but out of a genuine concern to reflect Canadian loyalty and pride in our public spaces accurately. To let Wayne Gretzky's name continue to adorn our parkway and sports centre would be to ignore this blatant display of patriotic disconnect.
We must take action. We request the Brantford city council to consider removing Wayne Gretzky's name from the Parkway and Sports Centre. It's not about erasing history. It's about standing for what we believe in - national pride, honor, and integrity. If we decide to live by these principles, we must be willing to make difficult decisions that reflect them. We ask you to support this cause and sign the petition.
