The intersection at Union Street and Prince Street in Port Moody has long presented safety concerns, particularly for pedestrians. We support the City's efforts to make this intersection safer and recognize that action is needed.

However, the City's recent temporary installation of plastic barriers that narrow the intersection has created a significant new safety concern for drivers and passengers in vehicles.

Vehicles making a right turn from Prince Street onto Union Street now have substantially less room to complete the turn safely. Drivers may be forced to choose between:

Striking the plastic barriers and potentially damaging their vehicles; or crossing the centre line and entering the path of oncoming uphill traffic.

This creates an unnecessary risk of head-on collisions, injuries and vehicle damage.

A solution intended to improve pedestrian safety should not create a new hazard for vehicles. The current temporary configuration appears to make the intersection more difficult to navigate safely, particularly when vehicles are travelling in opposing directions.

We respectfully ask the City of Port Moody to:

• Remove the temporary barriers that currently narrow the intersection at Union Street and Prince Street.
• Conduct a thorough review of the intersection design, considering both pedestrian and vehicle safety.
• Develop and implement a revised long-term solution that improves pedestrian safety without forcing turning vehicles into barriers or across the centre line into oncoming traffic.
• Consult with nearby residents and regular users of the intersection before implementing a permanent redesign.

We believe Port Moody can find a solution that protects pedestrians while also allowing vehicles to navigate the intersection safely.
