The Issue

Petition Statement:
We, the members of the United Auto Workers (UAW), call on Federal Monitor Neil Barofsky to immediately investigate and remove UAW President Shawn Fain for a consistent pattern of misconduct, constitutional violations, retaliation, and obstruction of federal oversight.

As the membership—recognized in the UAW Constitution as the highest authority in this union—we submit this demand based on the following:

🔴 CHARGES AGAINST SHAWN FAIN:

1. Abuse of Authority
Fain illegally stripped duties from Secretary-Treasurer Margaret Mock without International Executive Board (IEB) approval.
📰 Detroit Free Press, Feb. 29, 2024
UAW Shakeup Leads to Reassignments

2. Retaliation and Conflicts of Interest
Fain retaliated against VP Rich Boyer for refusing to back a deal involving Fain’s fiancée and her sister—clear ethical violations.
📰 Detroit Free Press, July 11, 2024
UAW President Fain Benefits Fiancée’s Sister

3. Blocking Federal Oversight
Fain refused to turn over unredacted documents to the federal monitor—violating the 2021 Consent Decree.
📰 Detroit Free Press, Dec. 17, 2024
UAW Monitor Says Fain Not Fully Cooperating

4. Illegally Appointing Non-Members
Fain appointed individuals to union positions who were not members, skipping internal procedures and violating the Constitution.
📰 Wall Street Journal, Oct. 30, 2023
UAW Young Activists Face Power Struggles

5. Conduct Unbecoming of a Union Officer
The totality of these actions—overreach, retaliation, obstruction, and favoritism—violates Article 30 and 31 of the Constitution.

6. Unethical Raises and Misuse of Funds
Raises were allegedly given to select officials without IEB knowledge, possibly misrepresented in LM-2 filings.

7. Financial Reporting Violations
Improper or incomplete LM-2 reporting puts the union at risk of federal investigation and violates transparency laws.

💬 WHY THIS MATTERS:

Union democracy is failing when local leaders and IEB members fear retaliation for holding the President accountable. Fain has built a climate of fear where elected officials remain silent to protect their jobs. This goes against everything the UAW is supposed to stand for.

📢 WE DEMAND ACTION:

We call on UAW Monitor Neil Barofsky to:

Investigate all charges fully
Remove President Shawn Fain under the 2021 Consent Decree
Protect whistleblowers and reformers from retaliation
Restore democratic accountability to our union

✍️ Sign this petition and stand up for transparency, fairness, and the future of our union.
