The Issue

For far too long, the citizens of Mobile have been subjected to the divisive rhetoric and inflammatory actions of Pastor Travis Johnson. Johnson’s newest tactic is going after Pride banners that have been approved and hung during Pride month. He wants these removed and instead have added banners that state “Protect our children from gender ideology.” He also claims that tax payer money should not be used to promote Pride activities. He is insistent that Mobile wants the “nuclear family” of man and wife only. As a community leader, Johnson should be held to the highest standards of integrity and inclusivity. Instead, his continued presence and influence have only served to foster an environment of hate and division.

One of the fundamental roles of the Visit Mobile board is to promote our beautiful city as a welcoming and inviting destination for all. This mission is incompatible with having a board member whose actions and words run contrary to these values. It’s crucial that our community boards reflect the diverse, accepting, and warm spirit of our city — a spirit that Pastor Travis Johnson has consistently undermined.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the spread of hate speech and discriminatory practices can significantly harm the community fabric, affecting tourism, economic growth, and the overall reputation of a city. Mobile deserves better than to have its name tied to negativity and division. Our tourism industry should represent the best of what our community has to offer — diversity, hospitality, and acceptance.

Numerous residents have voiced their concerns through social media, and other avenues. These voices represent a growing consensus that Pastor Johnson's presence on the Visit Mobile board is incompatible with the organization’s mission and the city's values. By removing him, a powerful message would be sent — that Mobile stands united against hate and division, embracing instead a future of inclusiveness and respect for all.

Replacing Pastor Johnson with a board member who truly embodies the values of Visit Mobile would not only re-establish faith in the board but also ensure that future endeavors reflect the collective spirit of Mobile's citizens.

We urge the Mayor's Office and the current Visit Mobile board to take immediate action. Remove Travis Johnson from his position to safeguard the integrity, reputation, and unity of our beloved city.

Let’s show Travis and the Visit Mobile board that we will not stand for this kind of hatred. Let’s show him that Mobile is a city of love and inclusion. Join us in this cause and sign the petition to help Mobile move forward with positivity and inclusivity.
