The issue

Dear Bishop Shane Mackinlay,

We, the undersigned, respectfully petition you to take action to remove the sculpture Transcendence from Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bendigo. As faithful Catholics, we are deeply concerned that this artwork and accompanying commentary, displayed in a sacred space, contains pagan and occult elements, promotes non-Christian spirituality, risks confusing the faithful and offends against the natural holy and beautiful character of the building. Sacred Heart Cathedral, as a consecrated building, dear to the faithful of Sandhurst Diocese, should reflect the beauty, truth, and piety of our Catholic faith, as required by Church teaching and canon law.

Canon 1210 states: Only those things which serve the exercise or promotion of worship, piety, or religion are permitted in a sacred place; anything not consonant with the holiness of the place is forbidden. In an individual case, however, the ordinary can permit other uses which are not contrary to the holiness of the place.

Even if this Canon is interpreted to allow non-religious exhibits, in such cases each exhibit should be examined to ensure it is in harmony with Catholic teaching and the sacred character of the place. We believe this sculpture not only fails to meet this standard, but directly offends against Catholic faith and worship. A more thorough description of concerns about the statue can be found below.

We respectfully request that:

  • The statue, Transcendence, be immediately removed from Sacred Heart Cathedral
  • The Diocese of Sandhurst review its policy for sanctioning of exhibits in Sacred Heart Cathedral. Such a policy could include:
    • That the artist/organiser must fully communicate all content of the exhibit including descriptions, promotional materials, associated online content, associated works, etc. to the Diocese of Sandhurst before a decision is made.
    • That an assessment is carried out of any spiritual, theological or religious claims that are expressed by the work for harmony with the Catholic Faith.
    • That a period of time be allowed where the faithful are informed of the proposal and able to contribute to the decision-making process in accord with the principals of synodality and Canon 212§3.

Please be assured of our ongoing prayers and support for you in your ministry.
