Remove Traffic Cameras in Belleville School Areas

The Issue

In Belleville, the installation of traffic cameras in school areas has become a contentious issue and it's personal for many residents, including me. It feels like a massive cash grab rather than a genuine effort to protect our children. The City of Belleville has implemented these cameras claiming it's to protect students and ensure safer roads. However, the true impact seems to be an unwelcome increase in traffic tickets and sanctions rather than improved safety conditions around our schools.

Statistics and studies from other cities show that while cameras can have a deterrent effect, they are not always the most effective or fair means of reducing accidents and speeding. In Toronto, for example, a review of the speed camera system revealed that while there was a decline in speeding violations, the revenue generated by fines reached millions, raising concerns about the underlying motives.

What we need in Belleville are solutions that genuinely enhance safety without punishing drivers unnecessarily. Instead of relying on cameras, there should be a focus on real community-centered approaches. This includes hiring crossing guards, improving signage, and increasing police officer presence in school zones to ensure that speed limits are observed and children are protected.

We need to redirect the resources spent on maintaining these cameras toward more effective and community-friendly methods that address the root causes of unsafe driving. By doing so, we can ensure that our children are truly safe and that the motives behind traffic enforcement are transparent and focused on safety rather than revenue.

Please join me in urging the City of Belleville to reconsider the use of traffic cameras in school areas and to prioritize the implementation of proactive and genuine safety measures. Sign this petition to make a change for a better and safer community.
