Remove the varsity football coach at Mundelein High School
The Issue
My child, a student and player at Mundelein High School, has been at the forefront of personal attacks by the varsity football coach, John Cowhey. They've faced intimidation tactics due to their personal beliefs and have been subjected to physical intimidation because of the coach's dual role as a coach and teacher. This behavior has caused unnecessary mental harm. In both the classroom and on the field, the coach has belittled students for holding different political views. It's disheartening to see a coach, someone who should inspire and mentor, engaging in behaviors that are detrimental to young athletes and students.
Furthermore, the coach has publicly argued with and harassed other coaches in front of the players, fostering a divisive and hostile environment. Players, students, and even parents, who disagree with him are ostracized, and this isolation negatively impacts their academic and athletic performances. As a head coach, he should be nurturing future collegiate athletes, not telling them they are worthless and shouldn't pursue athletics.
This situation is exacerbated by the coach's tendency to segregate players who prefer working with other two main coaches, treating them with disdain and unfairness. Consequently, there's been a noticeable increase in students quitting the team, attributing their departure to the coach's treatment. While the other main coaches work to uplift and support these athletes, this particular coach's actions tear them down. This toxic environment must come to an end.
We are asking Mundelein High School to take immediate and decisive action by removing the current varsity football coach from his position. It is imperative that students and athletes are provided an environment conducive to their growth and well-being, free from hostility and emotional abuse. Please join us in our fight for a supportive and respectful atmosphere at Mundelein High School by signing this petition.
