The Issue

Every summer, I eagerly head to Donegal for an experience that has been cherished by generations – pier jumping at Portnablagh. But now, this tradition is in jeopardy. The newly installed railing on the historic Portnablagh pier has not only changed the landscape, but has also dampened the spirits of those who hold this pastime dear.

For over 100 years, this pier has been a place of excitement and joy. Families, friends, and tourists have gathered here, embracing the thrill of jumping into the sea, feeling the rush of the cool Atlantic waters. It's a rite of passage, a community bonding activity that fosters camaraderie among those who gather there.

However, the recent addition of a railing has made it nearly impossible to enjoy the freedom and exhilaration that come from pier jumping. While safety is important, the existing tradition of safe and responsible jumping by experienced locals has never warranted such an intrusive barrier.

The local economy thrives on tourism. Many visitors choose Donegal for its unique coastal adventures, and the Portnablagh pier is a significant draw. The railing not only obstructs the view but also hampers the free-spirited, adventurous image that Donegal is known for.

We propose an alternative solution that focuses on educating new visitors on safe jumping practices, enhancing monitoring during peak times, and introducing signage that emphasizes safety without compromising the experience.

Let's restore the pier to its former glory and retain the essence of what makes Portnablagh special. Join me in asking the local authorities to reconsider the installation of this railing. Let us bring back the unbridled joy of Portnablagh, ensuring future generations can enjoy this tradition just as we have.

Sign this petition to preserve a century-old tradition and rejuvenate the beloved Portnablagh pier.
