The Issue

We, the undersigned residents, and supporters of North Sydney, respectfully petition the Municipal, Provincial, and Federal Governments to work together in removing the structure known as the “Old Town Post Office,” located at 17 Archibald Avenue, North Sydney, Nova Scotia, and replace it with a vibrant community gathering and entertainment space for the enjoyment of both residents and visitors.

This long-abandoned building has become a contaminated eyesore in the heart of our downtown core. The Federal Government sold the property despite knowledge of existing contaminants, and since that time, the structure has been left to deteriorate, posing potential health and safety risks while negatively impacting the appearance and vitality of our community.

In addition, the veterans and members of Armstrong Memorial Branch 19 Legion have been left to endure the negative impact of this abandoned structure. It stands in stark contrast to the meaning and purpose of the cenotaph, a sacred place of remembrance and respect for those who served and sacrificed for our country. Allowing such a neglected and contaminated building to remain beside this important monument is profoundly disrespectful to our veterans, their families, and the community. This site should reflect dignity, pride, and gratitude — not decay and neglect.

We urge all three levels of government to take immediate, coordinated action transforming this neglected site into a welcoming community hub would honor our town’s history, support local businesses, and demonstrate respect for those who served our country and community.

Together, we can replace decay with renewal—and turn a long-standing problem into a point of pride.
