Remove the Offensive Mural from the Bell Conference Center

The Issue

This petition is deeply personal to the students on the campus of West Alabama, in Livingston, AL. There exists a mural in the Bell Conference Center that negatively depicts a gruesome period of African American history. This mural has been in place since 2009; it is not just distasteful but also serves as a painful reminder of the struggles and atrocities faced by our ancestors. It's located on an institution predominantly attended by black students, which makes its presence even more unsettling.

The artwork in question does not inspire or uplift; instead, it perpetuates pain and trauma among those who encounter it daily. Art should be used to educate and enlighten, not to cause distress or discomfort. Historically, art has been used as a powerful tool for communication and expression. However, when it becomes a source of distress rather than inspiration or enlightenment, it's time we reconsider its place in our society.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) reports that such negative portrayals can lead to psychological harm among communities already dealing with racial trauma (source: NAACP). Furthermore, according to studies conducted by psychologists at Stanford University, exposure to racially insensitive material can adversely affect academic performance among minority students (source: Stanford University).

We are not asking for history to be erased or forgotten; instead, we seek respect and sensitivity towards those who have been historically marginalized and traumatized. We believe that educational institutions should be places where all students feel safe and respected.

We believe that art should reflect our shared values of respect, dignity, equality and unity. Let us replace this disturbing image with one that truly represents our diverse community's spirit and resilience.

The Bell Conference Center is an integral part of our campus, hosting numerous events throughout the year for students and staff from University of West Alabama. It's time we take a stand against such insensitive depictions that only serve to open old wounds rather than promote healing and understanding. We urge those with authority over this matter - The University Board of Trustees - to remove this offensive piece immediately.

Please join us in calling for the removal of this distasteful mural from the Bell Conference Center – because no one should have their painful history exploited for artistic expression without their consent or consideration for their feelings.
