The massive Confederate flag flying over the Interstate 4 and Interstate 75 interchange in Tampa is a prominent symbol of oppression, white supremacy, and slavery. It serves as a daily, painful reminder of a past defined by human trafficking, systemic cruelty, and the denial of basic human rights. Much like hate symbols in other democratic nations, this flag has no place in public view. A historical museum is a suitable environment for this memorabilia—not towering over a major American interstate.
The strategic placement of this monument is particularly egregious. The park sits less than two miles from the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard exit. Flying a symbol of the Confederacy so close to a highway named after a global icon who gave his life for civil rights is a direct insult to his memory and the ongoing fight for equality.
This giant flag does not represent the diverse, inclusive, and forward-thinking community of Tampa and Hillsborough County today. It serves only to divide us and keep historical wounds open.
