The Issue

I am a Christian but, I also respect the vast diversity of beliefs in our community. Recently, a Texas law has come to my attention which mandates that if someone sponsors a classroom, the Ten Commandments must be displayed in that classroom. This seems like a clear violation of the First Amendment rights to freedom of religion, and it's time we address this issue for the sake of all students and educators across the state.

The First Amendment of the United States Constitution clearly states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." Forcing the display of the Ten Commandments, regardless of the intentions behind sponsorship, verges on the establishment of a particular religious perspective within public educational institutions. Many amazing educators and schools are being put into a situation where they are forced to hang the ten commandments in their classroom just because one person wanted to make the posters and put them in the entire school.
It is crucial to understand that not all students and teachers practice Christianity. In fact, Texas is home to a beautifully diverse population with multiple faiths and beliefs including Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, atheism, and many more. Each deserves the respect and freedom to learn and teach in an environment free from religious imposition.

Instead of mandating the display of religious artefacts, we should encourage educational spaces that respect and welcome all faiths as well as those who do not follow a religion. Schools should be sanctuaries of knowledge, respect, and inclusivity. Let's find alternative ways to support our schools financially without infringing on individual religious freedoms.

By signing this petition, you are standing up for the First Amendment and advocating for a fair education system for all Texas students and educators. It is time we urge our lawmakers to remove this law, respect everyone's freedom of belief, and foster an environment of mutual respect and inclusivity in our public schools. Please sign and share this petition to make a real difference.
