The Issue

I’ve always worn hoodies – they’re comfortable, they keep me warm, and most importantly, they make me feel confident in who I am. The recent decision by CISD staff to ban any article of clothing with a hoodie, following a firearm incident at school, feels punitive rather than protective. With winter approaching, it’s a pressing issue as many students, like myself, don’t have jackets that lack a hoodie.

This new dress code administration seems to suggest that hoodies equate to a safety risk, yet the core issue was related to school security and not our clothing choices. By focusing on banning hoodies, a popular piece of winter attire, we're not addressing the root problem. Instead, we're left feeling caged and restricted in our freedom to choose our school attire.

An appropriate dress code should consider the needs and welfare of its students holistically. According to a study by the School Safety Advocacy Council, safety measures that involve students and staff working together, through dialogue and cooperation, have a far greater impact on school safety than restrictive clothing policies. Our school should prioritize initiatives that enhance communication and understanding between students and staff rather than using clothing bans as a safety blanket.

On top of this, Outdoor School Project data reveals that appropriate winter clothing is crucial for student well-being – covering ears and neck properly contributes to better health through the cold months. Banning hooded jackets seems like a misstep when weighed against student health implications and the practicality of students’ attire and choices.

I urge the CISD administration to reconsider this ban and engage in an open dialog with students, parents, and safety experts to create a more inclusive and effective safety strategy. A reassessment of safety protocols with student needs in mind will not only make us feel secure but also ensure fair treatment.

Please sign this petition if you believe in a balanced and reasonable approach to school safety and student attire that respects our choices while keeping everyone secure. Let's work together for a school environment that is not only safe but also understanding and fair.

To those who this affects, This petition does not condone wearing the hood on hoodies in the school building and is willing to amend the rule to increase punishment who want to ruin this for others.
