The issue

Growing up with ADHD has been both a challenge and a journey towards self-acceptance, not just for me, but for my loved ones too. My sister, mother, many of my friends, and I have walked this path together, striving tirelessly for understanding in a world that often misunderstands us. After years of advocacy and education, we've seen just how impactful a society's perception can be on our mental health and daily lives.

So imagine our fear when Channel 4 aired "The Great ADHD Myth?", a program stating that our experiences and struggles are not genuine. This is not just a documentary; it is a harmful narrative that undermines the hard-won recognition we’ve achieved. It risks undoing years of progress by spreading misinformation, which could lead to increased stigma, less compassion, and reduced access to essential support and resources for people with ADHD.

ADHD is not a myth. It is a well-documented neurological condition affecting millions globally. According to the ADHD Institute, approximately 5% of children and 2.5% of adults worldwide live with ADHD, which is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. The detrimental impact of undermining this reality can be profound, potentially discouraging individuals from seeking diagnoses or support.

We call on Channel 4 to recognize the harm caused by broadcasting such damaging content and to take immediate action by removing "The Great ADHD Myth?" from airing. Additionally, we urge Channel 4 to partner with ADHD organizations in the UK to produce programming that accurately reflects the experiences and challenges faced by individuals living with ADHD.
