Remove the Deledao Extension from Hastings Schools

The Issue

The Deledao Extension is meant to filter inappropriate content, and prevent students from distracting websites during school hours, and yet it's getting out of hand.

The Deledao extension constantly and extensively monitors student activity on the internet, which infringes on personal privacy. The constant surveillance creates an atmosphere of distrust, which has the potential to affect students' ability to research and explore concepts freely and responsibly. Privacy is a fundamental and important right, and students shouldn't be required to sacrifice it to learn.

Moreover, this extension is powered by AI, and the only way to unblock the websites it blocks is to send a direct message to the technology department, which takes time away from learning. The AI also occasionally blocks perfectly acceptable websites, even websites that are used by teachers and students alike for educational reasons. I know multiple students who have had sites that were meant to be used for studying, that were blocked. Most teachers are also unable to unblock websites, which causes more work for both the teachers and the people who have to deal with this. By taking away from our learning, it affects both students and teachers negatively. This website also continues to block these websites after school hours.

As well as the fact that there is a lack of transparency in how the extension collects and uses our data. Families - parents and students alike - are mostly unaware of what personal information is being gathered, leading to worries about data usage and security. Families deserve to know how our data is being utilized - and for what purpose.

As students, I believe we should be able to handle the responsibility of knowing what websites we should, and should not use. In blocking almost every other website, the district is stating they do not trust us to make decisions, and that can affect our learning and our creativity. In understanding that there will be people who will ruin it for others, I know we can most likely not remove it. However, perhaps we could replace it with a new filtering system; StayFocused.

StayFocused is a filtering, and focus timer all in one. And it's completely free of charge. In switching to this new filtering system, I think that students and teachers alike would be much happier.
