Remove the BMI scale from medical standards

Remove the BMI scale from medical standards
The Issue
I've been told I cannot proceed with IVF in a smaller operating room because of my weight, specifically because of my high BMI. This arbitrary number has been a stumbling block in my journey towards fertility treatments, making it feel like an insurmountable barrier. It's heartbreaking to face such discrimination simply due to a statistical measurement that can't capture my personal health journey.
The Body Mass Index (BMI) scale, frequently used in medical settings to determine a person's health, fails to consider the diversity in human bodies. It’s a flawed system based on outdated assumptions about body size and health, one that does not account for differences in muscle mass, bone density, racial and ethnic variations, and gender disparities. For example, athletes often find themselves categorized as overweight or obese despite their high level of fitness, simply due to muscle mass. This isn't just my struggle; it's a shared one among countless individuals facing similar discrimination across various health contexts.
Current studies have shown that BMI is not an accurate indicator of an individual's overall health. According to the National Institutes of Health, BMI does not distinguish between weight from fat and muscle, nor does it indicate the distribution of fat on the body. This leads to misdiagnosis and inappropriate medical advice for many. Moreover, the BMI scale was derived from data that disproportionately represent certain racial and ethnic groups, failing to accurately depict a global population's health status.
It’s time for healthcare systems to adopt more holistic, inclusive approaches to health assessment that respect individual differences and provide equitable opportunities for individuals regardless of their body size. We call on healthcare policymakers, medical institutions, and practitioners to remove BMI as a crucial determinant in medical decision-making and replace it with more comprehensive evaluations of health and wellness.
By signing this petition, you support the move towards a more supportive and unbiased medical system that respects the individuality of every person. Let's drive change for those who have faced undue discrimination and make healthcare more inclusive for all.
I my self will take this to every medical board and challenge this scale as 1.) discriminatory to men and women. 2.) completely outdated as the man who created the scale in 1832 was an astronomer, a mathematician and a statistician he was from Belgium and the scale was not based on the health of individuals but as a average median of what the average man looks like. 3.) this scale can lead to misdiagnosis in individuals and can cause harm if not serious injury based of what the number reads on the scale.
