Earlier this September, Waterfield Library at Murray State University announced their new mascot, "Larry P. Otterfield", that was created with the use of Generative AI. Although the University has several programs that involve graphic design and art, the Library directors chose to use Artificial Intelligence to generate a mascot. After backlash from students, the University Library doubled down on their stance with the mascot, and used "copyright and time" as an excuse. This is an unethical practice as it eliminates any student involvement or human efforts in the creation of the mascot, and also goes against what a library is supposed to stand for. The University is also very strict with Artificial Intelligence usage with students, with many classes stating that the usage of AI will result in an automatic fail or suspension. In conclusion, this situation is extremely disrespectful to the University students, and overall gives Murray State University a bad look.
