Remove Switch drinks from local schools

The Issue

My son attends school in Potsdam, NY, where Switch drinks are regularly sold to students. Each bottle contains nearly 30 grams of sugar. Despite having a doctor's note advising against sugary items due to his health condition, these drinks are still available, and I have observed a direct correlation between their consumption and his aggressive behavior. It is alarming to see how easily accessible these high-sugar beverages are in an educational environment where our children are supposed to thrive and learn.

Excessive sugar consumption in children is not just an issue in my home but is a growing concern across the United States. According to the American Heart Association, children between the ages of 2 and 18 should consume no more than 25 grams of added sugars per day, yet a single Switch drink exceeds this recommendation. This poses serious health risks, including obesity, diabetes, and behavioral problems, which are not ideal conditions for a learning environment.

By offering these sugary beverages in our schools, we are contradicting the educational and health values we strive to instill in our children. Schools have a responsibility to provide a safe and health-conscious environment. They should be places where healthy choices are encouraged and reinforced, not where long-term detrimental health effects are inadvertently promoted.

There are healthier alternatives that can be provided in schools—water, flavored water with zero sugar, or 100% fruit juices—that can better support the health and well-being of our children. Removing Switch drinks from our schools' health policies can be immediately improved. Let's work together to advocate for healthier school environments that promote positive behavior and well-being for all students.

I urge you to sign this petition to remove Switch drinks from local schools in Potsdam, NY. By doing so, we can take a significant step towards ensuring a healthier future for our children.
