Remove Surveilling Apps From Schools.

Remove Surveilling Apps From Schools.

The Issue

Back in the beginning of the 7th grade, I was accused of using ChatGPT to cheat and write an essay for me. I wasn’t on it, but a surveilling app named “GoGuardian” detected it and flagged me to the teacher. Since then, I’ve been trying to find evidence against surveilling students. Surveilling students should be banned from MV schools because it invades kids' privacy, takes away their freedom, and decreases their learning.

One reason why surveilling students should be banned is that it invades kids' privacy. Schools that surveil students usually track their keystrokes, search history, what they do, and what apps they’re on. Let’s say that a kid is looking at something private, like a family member. A teacher can look at their screen and see all the kid’s personal information. This proves that surveilling apps, like GoGuardian, invade kids' privacy.

Another reason why surveilling students should be outlawed is that it takes away their freedom. Since surveilling apps can block and close tabs, it blocks kids from being expressive and creative. This proves that surveilling apps can block kids from having freedom.

Surveilling apps can decrease students' education. Since surveilling apps can close and block tabs, teachers could accidentally block a learning tab (like Clever), and prevent kids from getting on it. Another example is if a student is all done with their work and wants to work on something from another class, they can’t because teachers have a block to prevent them.

Even though surveilling students can be useful to teachers, the truth is that surveilling students can also be harmful to teachers. If a student is doing something bad, the teacher could see it and be traumatized. Another example is if the teacher “sees” that the student is on something bad but they aren’t, they can be falsely accused.

Since surveilling apps invade kids' privacy, take away their freedom, and limit kids' learning capability, it’s safe to say that they should be at least removed. So let’s forget spying, and let children be free.
