The Issue

In the midst of an affordability crisis, inflation, rising taxes, and ongoing economic pressure, families in Waterloo Region, Ontario, are struggling to make ends meet. Automated speed enforcement cameras serve as a financial burden, siphoning hard-earned money through impersonal, automated systems. These cameras disproportionately impact working-class individuals, many of whom are simply trying to commute safely, efficiently, and peacefully to support their families.

Speed enforcement cameras in Waterloo Region are seen as an unnecessary layer of stress and expense for local residents. The fines incurred by these automated systems can quickly add up, making it difficult for many to afford basic necessities. On top of that, these fines contribute to an already high tax burden that local citizens are forced to shoulder.

There is no substitute for human judgement, especially in traffic enforcement. Police presence on the roads enables real-time assessments and encourages safer driving through direct monitoring and more personalized interaction with motorists. Moreover, it ensures that enforcement officers prioritize the safety and well-being of the community while being able to recognize genuine emergencies that automated systems cannot discern.

Studies have also shown that speed cameras do not significantly reduce accidents and often divert attention away from more pressing traffic violations that genuinely compromise safety on our roads. Thus, instead of ensuring safer streets, these cameras sometimes only serve to generate revenue. Through their removal, Waterloo Region can focus on constructive ways to enhance road safety by investing in infrastructure improvements, public awareness campaigns, and community-driven initiatives that encourage responsible driving.

Join us in urging the local government and municipal leaders to remove speed enforcement cameras from our streets, and support practical solutions that truly benefit our community. Your voice matters!  Please sign the petition to make a difference today.
