Remove Segregated Bathroom Signs in Historic Punta Gorda Building
The Issue
As a white person, I am deeply aware that I will never fully comprehend the profound trauma and pain caused by racism. Yet, it is clear to me that the segregated bathroom signs in a historic building in the town of Punta Gorda, Florida are offensive and insensitive. They are triggering painful traumas under the guise of "educating future generations".
This building may be historic, but history should not serve as an excuse for preserving symbols of racial segregation. It’s not a museum, it’s a public business with public restrooms. It is possible to educate people about our past without causing harm or offense - a photograph and an explanatory sign would suffice.
Segregation was officially abolished over 50 years ago with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. However, remnants like these signs continue to perpetuate racial division and inequality. According to data from Pew Research Center (2016), about six-in-ten Americans (58%) say racism is a “big problem” in society today.
The presence of these signs contradicts our nation's progress towards equality and inclusivity. We must remember that being white does not make one right - we all have equal rights regardless of race or color.
Let us take down these segregated bathroom signs now! Let us replace them with educational materials that do not trigger traumatic memories but instead foster understanding and respect for our shared history.
Please sign this petition if you believe in promoting equality, understanding, compassion within Punta Gorda community!
