Remove school extension filters at home

The Issue

In Terrell County, GA, many students, including myself, face the frustrating reality of having our chromebook use monitored and restricted by school filters, even while we are at home on our personal WiFi networks. This intrusion extends beyond the school premises and limits our ability to enjoy our personal time freely, which is essential for maintaining a healthy balance between education and relaxation.

For students, the ability to unwind at home is crucial. It's the time we get to follow our interests, play online games, watch videos, connect with friends, and explore whatever brings us joy. For me, this personal time is more than that.  It's literally my only source of joy outside of the academic pressures. School is important, and I understand the need for filters and restrictions in that setting to maintain a conducive learning environment. However, implementing these filters on the devices at home intrudes on our privacy and takes away our freedom...something that should be respected.

Schools already have strict internet policies in place to ensure a productive educational space. But what is the point of these restrictions following us into our homes? Home is meant to be a sanctuary where we have the liberty to explore and do whatever makes us happy without any unnecessary constraints. Forcing these school internet restrictions upon us at home defeats the purpose of having a separate private space entirely.

I am advocating for our schools in Terrell County to distinguish between school and home environments when it comes to browser filtering. It is crucial for students to have this distinction to nurture a more balanced lifestyle. After all, a healthy mind thrives on a balance of responsibility and freedom.
