My journey through the education system has been shadowed by missed opportunities and unfulfilled dreams. As a student belonging to the general category, I have consistently faced enormous challenges in accessing educational resources and opportunities, not because of my merit, but solely due to the intricate web of the reservation system entrenched in India.

The reservation policy, intended initially to uplift certain sections of society, has now evolved in such a way that it often sidelines capable students from the general category. According to the data from the Ministry of Education, about 50% of seats in central universities are reserved for SC, ST, and OBC candidates. This leaves less than half for unreserved category students, despite them often constituting a significant portion of the population.

A comprehensive survey by the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) indicates that many students from the general category lose their chance to study in prestigious institutions due to reservation protocols, pushing them to search for expensive alternatives abroad. This is not only an economic burden but also a drain on India's most talented minds who could contribute to national progress.

Moreover, the reservation system perpetuates social divisions and does not always reach the economically weaker segments of society. A more inclusive approach would be to focus on economic conditions rather than caste or community lines. The Union Government could consider a revision focusing on economically disadvantaged sections, enabling fair competition based on merit and need.

To build a future where merit is the guiding principle, we need to abolish the current reservation system and adopt a more equitable policy that addresses contemporary needs and believes in equal opportunity for all. Casting a shadow on ambitious students by the persistence of reservations not only dampens individual potentials but also stalls progressive national development.
