The Issue

For many years, we have honored Cesar Chavez by naming schools and facilities in Stockton after him. However, it is time to reconsider and rename these facilities to honor the work of the transformative leader: Dolores Huerta. This petition calls for the renaming of Stockton's schools and facilities from Cesar Chavez to Dolores Huerta in solidarity with her remarkable advocacy and to foster a more inclusive and just community.

Dolores Huerta has dedicated her life to fighting for the rights and dignity of farmworkers and the underserved. Unlike Cesar Chavez, Huerta has consistently championed the rights of undocumented workers and addressed the pervasive issues within the labor movement, including racism. By recognizing her contributions, we align ourselves with her mission to promote equity and justice for all, particularly the undocumented community that continues to face significant challenges.

In light of Dolores Huerta coming forward about the sexual assault she faced by Cesar Chavez, and other news have surfaced about the sexual exploitation of children, we call for the removal of his name on public facilities to promote the safety and autonomy of all survivors.

By renaming these schools and facilities, we signal our commitment to building a culture that prioritizes social, emotional, physical, and psychological safety for every member of our community We must collectively address this historical and generational harm, to build a more trauma informed and inclusive City for the dignity of human rights in Stockton, CA.

It's vital to acknowledge that Cesar Chavez, despite his contributions, was not immune to controversial stances, particularly concerning undocumented workers and within the broader Chicano movement. By choosing Dolores Huerta as our symbol, we embrace a leader whose values and actions resonate with our community’s current and future aspirations.

We urge the Stockton Unified School District, Stockton City Council, San Joaquin Delta College and local authorities to take this crucial step in honoring Dolores Huerta’s legacy and ensuring that our public spaces reflect the values of inclusivity, compassion, and justice. Join us in supporting this change by signing this petition. Together, we can pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future for Stockton and its residents.

As a district we are gathering all the information we can. Should a name change be considered the District would follow the established board policy, which includes forming a citizens advisory committee. The community input is an essential part of the school naming process. Prior to adopting any proposed name, the board would hold a public hearing to provide community members with the opportunity to share their input.
