Growing up in New Mexico, I've always been a fan of wrestling, attending shows whenever I could. Unfortunately, my home state makes this difficult. Every time a wrestling event is stalled or thwarted by our Athletic Commission, we lose revenue. Big-name wrestling companies shun New Mexico, taking their events, fans, and money elsewhere.

In its current form, the New Mexico Athletic Commission oversees professional wrestling like it's a competitive sport. This not only undermines the integrity of wrestling—which is entertainment, not sport—but also chokes out economic opportunities. Wrestling matches are performances, akin to theater. Yet, the commission burdens organizations with outdated regulations designed for sports, not scripted entertainment.

Consider this: wrestlers cannot perform in New Mexico without paying for unnecessary licenses, yet no background checks or training certifications are required. This does nothing but line the pockets of the commission. An individual with $35 can obtain a "professional wrestler" license, without a shred of proof of training or competency.

By removing wrestling from the commission’s purview and categorizing it as theatrical entertainment rather than a sport, we can eliminate undue licensing fees and allow for common-sense oversight focused on safety and performance integrity.

Let's call for a shift in perspective and regulatory reform in New Mexico.
