Remove Predatory Loan Apps Exploiting Ghanaians from Google Play Store

Remove Predatory Loan Apps Exploiting Ghanaians from Google Play Store
The Issue
In Ghana, many citizens are falling victim to predatory loan apps available on the Google Play Store. These apps are exploiting vulnerable individuals through fraudulent practices, deceptive marketing, and unauthorized data collection. They promise easy loans but trap users in exploitative agreements, charging hidden fees, imposing unrealistic repayment terms, and invading users' privacy.
We are calling on Google to take swift action to protect Ghanaians from these harmful apps and uphold their own Developer Policies, which these apps are blatantly violating.
If an app violates Google’s own policies and is still allowed to operate on the Play Store, then Google is complicit in the harm these apps cause. By failing to enforce its policies, Google enables these predatory practices, leaving users vulnerable to exploitation, harassment, and financial abuse.
What’s Happening?
Misleading Loan Terms:
These apps claim to offer loans with terms of 90-120 days but instead give users just 7 days to repay, often with high interest rates and processing fees deducted upfront. This misinformation misguides users, leading to financial distress and default.
Unauthorized Data Collection:
Many of these apps secretly collect sensitive personal data, including contacts, SMS messages, call logs, pictures, and location data. This data is then misused to harass users and defame them to their contacts.
Harassment and Abuse:
Users who fail to repay loans on time are subjected to harassment, threats, and defamation. Some apps go as far as creating fake "WANTED" posters of users and sending defamatory messages to their contacts.
Violations of Google’s Policies:
These apps violate Google Play Developer Policies, including:
Privacy and Data Security: Apps must disclose their data collection practices transparently and obtain consent. These apps fail to do so.
Deceptive Behavior: Apps must not mislead users about their services. These apps misrepresent loan terms and fees.
Harassment and Abuse: Apps must not engage in abusive practices, including defaming or harassing users.
Examples of Predatory Apps:
The following apps (and many others) are causing harm to Ghanaians:
Cash arrow - Online cash loan
GlowCredit
Wooden Loan - Personal Loan
Tap Loan - Fast Online Lending
Miniloan - Online Loan in Ghana
LoanBase: Secure Online Loans
PeaMoney
Lever Credit - Secure Loan
MoLoCredit
How This Harms the Public:
These apps target vulnerable populations, exploiting their financial needs and lack of access to fair credit systems. Users fall into cycles of debt, have their privacy violated, and suffer emotional distress from harassment and public defamation. This is unacceptable and must stop immediately.
Our Demands:
We are urging Google to:
Remove these predatory apps from the Play Store immediately.
Conduct thorough investigations into the developers of these apps.
Strengthen app vetting processes to ensure financial apps comply with data protection laws, are transparent about their terms, and do not engage in deceptive or abusive practices.
Google has a responsibility to ensure the apps on its platform are safe and trustworthy. By allowing these apps to operate, Google is enabling harm to innocent people and damaging public trust in the Play Store.
